Welcome
Western Society for Children is a Charity that assists parents in advocating for disability resources needed by their children. We also provide information about disabilities and offer direct services to children in the areas of: adaptive/specialized equipment, medical resources, recreation, communication and learning, and emotional well-being.
A disability can happen to anyone. It may be evident at birth, develop over time, or result from trauma. We think differently, holistically about disability, and are community and family focused.
Our programs are not government funded, meaning we don’t designate services to a particular category, excluding others. We make sure that we include children with ANY type of disability and their families who do not qualify for government services.
We work with families so they can stay strong and overcome barriers before the issues become a crisis. We don’t base success on simply one factor; we’re here to fight for you all the way. We want to be here emotionally as well, as we understand the importance emotional health and resilience. We are here to target not only the main issues, but any other concerns you may have. We know some people may fall through the cracks of the current system and we are here to help when you seem to have nowhere to turn.
Who we help
We assist BC families with any disability from a range of backgrounds. We help people regardless of their acceptance to government funding programs. Our services are provided even if you don’t have government funding or if you are on a waitlist. We are not exclusive to these two options.
History
In 1993, we started as Western Society for Children with Birth Disorders, intending to address underserved disabilities. We are determined as a charity to fill the gaps between community and government programs. We do this to empower families to help provide the best possible care for their children.
